The other day I learned that a fellow blogger, Lightly Crunchy, had attempted a similar version of homemade shampoo and had the same icky results that I did. Hearing about her shared disappointment reignited my desire to find a shampoo recipe I could live with or, dare I say, enjoy.
Nearly two weeks ago, I found a shampoo recipe on One Good Thing by Jillee that looked like it would fit the bill. However, I was hesitant to have another go after my first homemade shampoo debacle. But, today I strengthened my resolve and went for it.
Ingredients:
½ c. castille soap
½ c. coconut milk
1 tsp olive oil
20 drops lemon essential oil
Pour all ingredients in a bottle. Shake to combine.
So far, so good. I’ll keep you posted.
Happy Homesteading,
Kris
Tips & Tricks:
I needed to use about 1 Tbs. of shampoo to get my desired amount of suds.

Please, let me know how it goes! I went back to my old shampoo just to get my curls back again – I couldn’t hack the lank locks. I never thought I was vain until my curls left me. I’m willing to try again if you find you have good results.
So far, so good. We’ll see in a few days…
I just wanted to give a different perspective and experience. I’m uninformed as to what lightlycrunchy (just signed up to receive your blog btw lc) used on her hair but I, personally, have been using the baking soda and vinegar no shampoo method for going on two years now with excellent results. Prematurely gray hair with natural relaxed curl. My curl is so much nicer with no shampoo, with no added product like curl enhancer. I honestly believe it is the vinegar which acts as a curl enhancer.
That said, my 18yo daughter has very curly hair, almost kinky, and she did not like the baking soda/vinegar as well. She uses conditioner only and is happy with that regimen. My 16yo daughter uses baking soda and vinegar part time, but occasionally likes to use shampoo. I made the coconut milk/castille soap shampoo, using grapefruit essential oil and apricot kernel oil. Wow, what lather. I tried it just to see how it worked and I was taken by surprise at the amount of lather! Use less than you think you’ll need, unless you like to make lather hairstyles, like your kids like to do, you know? My daughter said she sported a mohawk, spikes and even some Star Wars styles the first time she used it!
My hair is the only thing on me that needs extra body. I just don’t think the baking soda and apple cider vinegar could give me the oomph I need, but the castille soap is doing the trick.

Quite interesting shampoo recipe, will await your results before trying. Thank you for visiting our blog “God’s Healing Plants” and for signing up to receive our postings. I sign up to receive your also. Blessings on your day.
The shampoo is great. I’ve even gotten my husband to start using it. Thanks for stopping by!
Has anyone tried to use coconut oil in place of olive oil? Trying this time around. I like the way my hair seems to have more body and be thicker without the chemical shampoos. Also less dry. I’m older and beginning to get some grey so hair seems a little more brittle with regular shampoos.
I’ve never tried coconut oil. The only coconut oil I have is a solid so I’m not sure how that would work. Let me know if you find a way!
I would love to hear about trying coconut oil too. Mine is a solid and I started using it as a facewash. I would love to try it in the shampoo too.
Does it work well as a facewash? I haven’t heard that before.
I have finally found a shampoo recipe that looks like it will be great! I cannot wait to try it. I’ve been using as natural as I could find on my own, but still did not like the ingredient list. I am almost out of my stuff I have now and want to try this right away! Thanks for the recipe!
You’re welcome. Good luck with it!
